Upcoming workshop: Censoring Science
As part of the upcoming People’s Social Forum (August 21-24, 2014), PIPSC will be sponsoring the workshop Censoring Science. This workshop will be part of the broader “Peoples’ University” organized by the Collectif d’analyse politique (CAP), the Nouveau Cahiers du socialisme (NCS) and Canadian Dimension magazine (CD). This workshop promises to bring together a diverse range of stakeholders to discuss and tackle the most pressing science policy issues that affect the future of Canada’s public science capacity and its ability to serve the public interest.
The workshop will be held on August 23, 2014, from 10:30am to noon at the University of Ottawa
No Science, No Evidence, No Truth, No Democracy! In recent years, drastic changes have been made to Canada’s science sector. The changes fall into three separate categories: reduction in the ability of Canadian researchers to share their findings with the general public, dismantling of our science capacity, and the devaluation of the role of scientific evidence in political decisions. The impacts of these changes affect more than science: it is critical for the functioning of democracy.
Why are scientists the victims of policies aimed at censoring, controlling and “disciplining” them based on the needs of government? What are the effects of the funding cuts, restraints and program closures we are witnessing in the federal government?
Panelists include Katie Gibbs (Researcher at the University of Ottawa and Executive Director of Evidence for Democracy ), Chris¬tian Rouillard (President of the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa) and Yves Gin¬gras (Researcher and Professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal ). The panel will be moderated by Pierre Mou¬terde (Writer for Presse-toi-à-gauche).
