Watch: Scientist speaks about belugas exploratory drilling in Cacouna
Quebec’s celebrity and oceanographer Boucar Diouf and scientist Pierre Béland appeared on the talk-show Tout le monde en parle to address the stoppage of TransCanada’s exploratory drilling in Cacouna ordered by the Superior Court of Quebec.
Boucar Diouf and Pierre Béland were invited to comment on the latest decision from the Superior Court of Quebec to suspend TransCanada’s exploratory drilling in Cacouna until October 15, 2014.
Both guests expressed concern that the drilling could have negative consequences on belugas in the Saint-Lawrence River and believe that not enough work is being done to protect aquatic mammals and the environment. Boucar Diouf also expressed concern that if there were an oil spill in the Saint-Lawrence River, there is a considerable the lack of resources and equipment to deal with such an incident.
Pierre Béland, Scientific Director at the St. Lawrence National Institute of Ecotoxicology, eagerly awaits the Judges final decision on whether these drillings are too dangerous for belugas and the environment.
