In February 2010, the Institute marked 90 years of service with the launching of the Professional Institute Legacy Foundation. On hand to celebrate the occasion were Institute business partners, representatives from the labour movement, the Foundation corporate sponsors, senior government bureaucrats and politicians. Although the Foundation is a new initiative, the Institute’s legacy of giving back to its members and to the community is longstanding. Since 1999, the Institute has been awarding scholarships through the Founders’ Scholarship Fund and with the help of corporate sponsors. In addition, the Institute has hosted its Charity Golf Tournament, the PIPSC Open, since 2002. Through the PIPSC Open, the Institute has been able to support children’s charities helping kids all across the country. The Scholarship Program and the PIPSC Open have generated more than $507,000 since 1999 to help young Canadians succeed. Aviva Canada is the Marquee Sponsor of the Professional Institute Legacy Foundation. Stephen Corea, Business Development Specialist, conveyed Aviva's pride in being able to support the Legacy Foundation and commended the Institute for being a good corporate citizen and for giving back to the community by helping young Canadians pursue their educational dreams. The next chapter in the Institute’s commitment to giving back to the community is the creation of the Legacy Foundation. A registered charity, the Foundation is the Institute’s vehicle for continuing the good work begun in 1999 (Charity Business Number 80869 4954). As the largest union of professionals in Canada, it was a natural choice for the Institute to decide to focus its efforts on helping young people to achieve their educational goals. In fact, the sole mission of the Foundation is to promote the values of professionalism and service to community by awarding scholarships to students attending post-secondary institutions. Overseeing this mission will be the Foundation’s Board of Directors, chaired by PIPSC President Gary Corbett. The Foundation Board includes representatives from the PIPSC Board of Directors, in addition to two external directors, Cassie Doyle, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources Canada, and Brian Bockstael, President of Coughlin and Associates. These two external directors bring a wealth of experience in working with charitable organizations and both share the Institute’s desire to help as many students as possible. The Legacy Foundation has forged a partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada to provide even more scholarships to Boys and Girls Clubs kids in communities across the country who otherwise might not have the opportunity to reach their potential. The Boys and Girls Clubs builds strong communities on many levels, including through a well-established scholarship program. The Institute deeply appreciates the tremendous contributions of its sponsors who have generously pledged their support to the Foundation. The Institute will continue to take great pride in who we are: Public Service Professionals Serving Canadians. |
