NR Group - Bargaining Update #2
The NR bargaining team held our second session with the employer April 21-23 and both sides discussed a number of issues and provided comments. We did agree and sign off on a few housekeeping issues related to updated language.
Similar to other Groups, the Institute tabled an MOU dealing with the use of employer facilities. This is related to recent issues that have arisen where Departments have denied the use of meeting rooms for holding Institute information meetings. The employer’s response was to point out that there is an existing policy and that they saw no need to include this in the Collective Agreement. The fact remains that this is clearly an issue which has the real potential for further unnecessary restrictions. If you have witnessed, or are aware of this, or similar problems, it would be helpful if you could provide the details to us; as usual facts and examples are always very helpful. Info can be sent to our Negotiator, Evan Heidinger.
Of particular interest was the employer’s response to our request to convert the existing Volunteer Day to an additional Personal Day of leave. Obviously there would be no financial or other impacts to the employer. In response TB provided statistics indicating that the NR Group members were only using 75% of the Personal leave and 67% of the Volunteer leave. In other words, with a Group population of 3200 members there were 800 days of Personal and 1056 days of Volunteer leave that were not taken.
This may be due to workload, scheduling, or other issues, or perhaps just the dedication and professionalism of you as members and professionals to simply get the work done and projects completed on time and within budget.
Whatever the reason that this time was not taken, we would like to hear your story to help support your bargaining team. If you have experienced any difficulty in receiving approval for this leave we would like to hear of your problems too.
Our next bargaining session is scheduled for the second week in June.
