PIPSC applauds the federal government’s introduction yesterday (January 28, 2016) of legislation aimed at repealing Bills C-377 and C-525, two of the most anti-labour laws ever passed in Canadian history.

Bill C-377, which received Royal Assent in June 2015 and came into force on December 30, 2015 and requires labour organizations and labour trusts to file reports with the Minister of National Revenue disclosing, among other things, detailed financial information as well as information on political, lobbying and other non-labour relations activities. This information would be made publicly available.

On Tuesday, June 30, 2015, the Conservative majority in the Senate passed – against a chorus of public, professional and political opposition – Bill C-377, the private member’s bill that would impose on unions (and only unions) the most onerous financial reporting obligations of any organization in Canada.

On April 23, 2015, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) submitted a brief to the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs opposing Bill C-377, a Conservative private member’s bill that the government is currently rushing through committee.
