Whistleblower Protection Law Coming into Force on April 15, 2007

The Public Servants Disclosure Protection Act (PSDPA), which protects public service employees and Canadians who report wrongdoings in the federal government, comes into force on April 15, 2007.

After waiting for more than fifteen years for legislated protections for employees who disclose wrongdoing, the Professional Institute is very happy to see the Act come into force.

The Institute has always maintained that members who denounce wrongdoing be fully protected from reprisals. The Institute welcomes the provision of a five-year review to allow stakeholders to review the implementation of the legislation and analyse its effectiveness. As such, the Institute will closely monitor the application of the protection rights of our members within the PSDPA.

The Institute is currently training representational staff on the application of the Act and participating on a working group to develop a Code of Conduct as required by the legislation.
