Electoral Reform: A Broken Promise
The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) expresses its extreme disappointment in the Prime Minister’s decision yesterday to break his longstanding promise that the next election would not be fought under a first-past-the-post voting system.
“Better government and a better, more representative electoral system go hand in hand,” said PIPSC President Debi Daviau. “Under the Harper government, we saw just how harmful a majority government elected through a first-past-the-post system can be. For that and other reasons, PIPSC supports a system of proportional representation more reflective of Canadians’ actual votes and that ensures every vote counts. We believe strongly that a PR system would make the future muzzling of federal scientists and the erosion of a fair tax system much less likely to occur.”
