Passing of Jack Layton

Olivia Chow
Member of Parliament for Trinity-Spadina
House of Commons
Ottawa ON K1A 0A6

Dear Mrs. Chow,

On behalf of the 60,000 members of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, please accept our sincere condolences for the loss of your husband, the Honourable Jack Layton.

Mr. Layton was widely recognized as our country’s social conscience, a man who so fully understood and respected Canada’s working men and women that to millions of us, he became simply known as “Jack”. He was an approachable and principled individual who conveyed an inclusive, down-to-earth perspective to the national political debate and to the House of Commons. In this and in so many other respects, he will be sorely missed.

Jack was more than just a highly-respected supporter of Canada’s labour movement, he was a dedicated and tireless advocate for the less fortunate in our society. His decades spent in public service touched the lives of a great many Canadians from all walks of life, and his was a voice of moderation in Parliament. His ability to look past partisan interests for the greater good will be sorely missed in the years ahead and his passing is a great loss to our country and to our people.

In the difficult days ahead, please be assured that our thoughts are with you and with your family.
