The Professional Institute in Transition

Following the passing of President Michèle Demers, the Board of Directors of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada met on February 21, 2009 to address the governance of the Institute until such time as a new President is elected.

Pursuant to the By-Laws of the Institute, the Board of Directors took the following decisions:

  • A special election for President will be held. The closing date for voting will be June 17, 2009. The term of office will be from June 22, 2009 until December 31, 2010.
  • In the interim, the following appointments were confirmed by the Board effective February 21, 2009:
  • Acting President Gary Corbett
    Acting Full-Time Vice-President Don Burns
    Acting Part-Time Vice-President Nita Saville

In addition, the Board agreed to fill a vacancy in the position of Director, National Capital Region at its next meeting, following consultation with the Regional Executive.

In summary, the Executive Committee of the Professional Institute for the period February 21, 2009 to June 21, 2009 will be constituted as follows:

Gary Corbett Acting President
Hélène Rogers Full-Time Vice President
Don Burns Acting Full-Time Vice President
David Gray Part-Time Vice-President
Nita Saville Acting Part-Time Vice-President

The decisions taken by the Board of Directors complete the first stage of the transition to a new President duly elected by the full membership of the Institute.

The Board of Directors wishes to thank all those who have offered kind words and support over the last two weeks, and wishes to assure all members that stable governance and a continued focus on protecting and advancing the rights of our members will be the most important priorities in the months to come.
