Cover Story - Hard-Won Victory for Term Employees and Equal Rights

The Institute celebrated a hard-won victory with Brigitte Lavoie, member of the CS Group working in the National Capital Region. Brigitte was a term employee who lost both her job and the opportunity to qualify for indeterminate status because she was on maternity leave. With the help of the Institute, she fought and won a battle for equal treatment for all term employees who take parental leave. We photographed Brigitte at home with her three children: Xavier (age 7), Amélie (age 5), and Simon-Nicolas (age 11).

PIPSC is a non-partisan union which does not tell its members for whom to vote. Our duty is to defend the interests of our members and, by extension, the interests of the Canadian public. That’s why the Institute went into action to encourage its members to speak up on issues affecting them during the federal election campaign.

In November, the Institute is launching a campaign in support of the science groups currently in bargaining or headed for arbitration.

President Michèle Demers presented the Institute's 2008 Gold Medal to Mr. Dan Beavon, Director of the Strategic Research and Analysis Directorate, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, in Ottawa on June 20, 2008.  
Scholarship LaureatesScholarship Laureates
A total of $32,000 was awarded to 10 successful candidates chosen from among 64 top-notch submissions in this ninth year of the scholarship program. Since its inception in 2000, the Scholarship Program has awarded 73 scholarships, totalling $196,000. The Institute appreciates the generosity of its scholarship sponsors. Congratulations to these deserving laureates.
