Steward Training Opportunities

The Institute’s Committee on Human Rights in the Workplace is offering training on Human Rights and National Employment Equity. This is national training intended to be a foundation for members who wish to serve on the Committee on Human Rights in the Workplace. To register, please submit the registration form found at www.pipsc.ca (under Issues/Human Rights).

National Human Rights Training

A National Human Rights training session will be provided in English on Friday, October 1, 2010 and Saturday, October 2, 2010 at the Delta Hotel, in Ottawa. The training session will provide participants with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Duty to Accommodate. It will also offer a forum where the following subjects will be discussed:

  • Why apologize? - approaching our First Nations
  • Saying the words - gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and the culture of silence
  • Know thy neighbour - what do we know about our Muslim and Hindu communities?
  • Look me in the eyes - the experience of the disabled and our comfort levels
  • It’s OK to cry - women in the professions and doing it like a man
  • Who is acting? - the denial of opportunity and systemic discrimination
  • Trouble Maker or Hero? - being isolated for daring to take a stand
  • Cultural Sensitivities - a case simulation

Registration closes on September 1, 2010. For more information, contact Mona Tilhoff (mtilhoff@pipsc.ca). Final selection of the participants will take place by September 3.

National Employment Equity (French only)

The training will be provided on Friday, October 29 and Saturday, October 30 in French in Bécancour, Québec. Participants will receive work material to prepare for the course, and can expect to participate in a number of simulations and role-playing exercises.

Registration closes on September 15, 2010. Final selection of the participants will take place by September 17, 2010. Preference will be given to members who sit on Employment Equity Committees. If you have any questions, please contact Mona Tilhoff (mtilhoff@pipsc.ca) at the PIPSC National Office.
