The Ontario region Basic Steward Training will be held on Thursday February 8, to Saturday February 10, 2018 at the Grand Hotel and Suites in Toronto.

By the end of this training you will have:

  • reflected on the purpose of unions in the workplace and in Canadian society as a whole and on the reasons why they became active in the union;
  • developed a better understanding of their role as Steward;
  • familiarized themselves with the structure and internal functioning of the Institute;
  • been provided with an overview of problem-solving mechanisms available to address issues of concern to the members they represent;
  • identified strategies and approaches to help build the union presence in their respective workplaces.

The Course Schedule:

On-line training

Basic training now has two equally important components; an online module and in-house facilitation. You will have a month prior to scheduled Basic Training to complete the online module entitled: IPLM- Introduction to PIPSC Labour Movement. Once your attendance has been approved, an online account will be created for you and subsequently, detailed information about accessing the module will be emailed to you.

In Person Training

Thursday February 8, 2018 - 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. - registration

- 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. - training

Friday February 9, 2018 - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. - training

- 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. - hospitality suite

Saturday February 10, 2018 - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. - training

Please ensure that you are available to attend all required hours of training before registering. Hospitality is not mandatory.



Hotel and Conference Location:

Hotel guests are required to present a valid credit card upon check-in at the hotel to process your room reservation. This will cover incidentals and any miscellaneous room charges, which are the responsibility of each guest. Check in time is 4:00 p.m. and check out time is 12:00. While every effort will be made for guests to have access to their rooms when they arrive, this may not be possible and your room may not be available until 4:00 p.m.

Late check-out is provided based on availability through authorization from the Front Desk. PIPSC will not be responsible for additional costs for late check-outs.

You will be emailed a letter to confirm your registration and further details regarding the training.


In the event of a requirement to cancel, you MUST inform me of your change of plans. If staff cannot be reached in a timely manner at least 24 hours before the event, YOU will be responsible for the cancellation, and if you have not done so, you may be billed for the hotel costs directly.

Should you have to cancel your attendance on Thursday February 8, 2018, please call the hotel directly to cancel your room and leave a message for me at the front desk. Do not leave a message at the regional office on the training dates, as it is unlikely that we will be able to check messages. Failure to do so may result in you being charged directly for your accommodation and related meal costs.


Lunch on Thursday February 8 will NOT be provided for steward trainees; therefore, per diem will be claimed by the member.

Hot/Cold Breakfast Buffet on Friday February 9 and Saturday February 10 is included in your hotel stay for steward trainees and their guest(s).

Lunch on Friday February 9 and Saturday February 10 will be provided for steward trainees only.

Hot/Cold Breakfast Buffet on Sunday February 11 (for those staying Saturday night that fall within the PIPSC Travel policy) is included in your hotel stay for steward trainees and their guest(s).

No other meals are provided. Regular travel policy provisions will apply.

Please do not remove food from the event area at lunches or breaks. This food is provided for attendees and presenters only.

Any food allergies or special dietary requests must be noted on your registration form so we can inform the hotel.


Self parking will be billed to the PIPSC master bill for 1 vehicle in the above ground or underground parking.


Institute policy allows for compensating participants who use vacation leave, compensatory leave or union leave without pay for attendance at Steward training. The participant must complete an Institute Compensatory Salary Claim form and attach a copy of a completed employer's leave form which indicates that the leave has been approved.

Salary compensation will be limited to the required hours on Thursday and Friday, plus reasonable travel time.

Reasonable travel time is defined as the amount of time that it takes to get from your home or office to the meeting location by the most direct route with no stops, with the intent on arrival at the training for 1:00 p.m.

Note: Experienced stewards are welcome to take Basic training as a “refresher” after 3 years; however, priority will be given to new stewards who haven’t yet received training.
